CASTILLOS
Power Curdled in stone
In Stein geronnene Macht
Thomas the Learnèd
Thomas der Buchkundige
Thomas the Learnèd is a European photographer. His striking images of medieval castles in Spain and Germany bear witness to how the authority of a bygone era continues to shape entire regions to this day. He does not create images using AI-prompts but instead captures on location the essence of power curdled in stone. At present, he resides in Bavaria.

| A PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
„Nobody needs what you find here. But perhaps you might simply enjoy it. I mainly show you castles. Mostly medieval ones. Undisturbed by people. Acting in their natural surroundings. Mostly in Spain. Mostly in the countryside. Visited mostly in a roadster. And mostly with the top down.“
„Was Sie hier finden, braucht niemand. Aber vielleicht macht es Ihnen einfach Freude. Ich zeige Ihnen vor allem Burgen. Meist mittelalterliche. Von Menschen ungestört. In ihrer natürlichen Umgebung. Meist in Spanien. Meist auf dem Land. Aufgesucht meist mit einem Roadster. Und meist mit offenem Verdeck.“
The story behind it – Wie es dazu kam
During his studies, the author came across the book Castillos, featuring photographs by the great Reinhart Wolf. This sparked a desire to ‘someday’ photograph castles such as Coca in the Spanish province of Segovia. Forty years later, fate intervened and indicated that ‘someday’ might be ‘NOW’. The author listened. Then he obtained registration as a professional photographer in the register of craftsmen, got himself a roadster and set off for Spain.
The Learnèd – Der Buchkundige
King Koloman, who ruled Hungary in the 12th century, possessed unusual expertise. Koloman could ‘read’. Hence, he was given the epithet ‘the Learnèd’. The author, too, still practises this art, which is becoming increasingly rare in today’s Europe. To precisely pinpoint his motifs, he deciphers Spanish road signs and specialist literature, among other things. This is the reason why he was allowed to adopt the same epithet as well.
Der im 12. Jahrhundert in Ungarn regierende König Koloman verfügte über ungewöhnliches Know-how. Koloman konnte „lesen“.
A Mazda MX-5 Roadster in shiny dark blue with 184 hp allows for quick transport of camera equipment on narrow and winding country roads. In this process, mainly Super E10 petrol is burned, with love. Unfortunately, however, it is sometimes necessary to get around on foot. To help with this, Mr Friedrich Hackner from Hilpoltstein in Bavaria personally designed and handcrafted custom-made footwear.

AI plays only a minor role in the artist’s images. He occasionally uses it to emphasise a visual statement or improve technical details. However, he does not allow it to invent images or key visual elements. AI may also relieve him of repetitive retouching tasks, but it must not replace the actual photographic work. Sometimes, even using AI, he would carefully remove a power pylon or – as he finds it particularly distasteful – a wind turbine in the distance. At times, he might widen the frame slightly. But he would never ‘replace the sky’ or ‘swap out clouds’. The author does not wish to create a different reality, but rather to convey his impressions of reality at the moment the photograph was actually taken.
Spanish Castillos
There are currently around ten thousand castles in Spain. At least, that’s what the AI of a popular search engine says. For photographers, these are easy subjects to capture, as they move much more slowly than rabbits, for example. Spain’s castillos often steer clear of urban areas, but out in the open countryside, you can observe them mostly undisturbed.
